I’ve asked parents what was a message they didn’t feel they heard enough of throughout their child’s treatment and the one that really stood out was FULLY RECOVERY IS POSSIBLE. Eating disorder data can be bleak and we know blips and relapse can occur but it is so important for caregivers to know that we CAN do this. Fully recovery and maintaining that recovery is not only possible but there for the taking.
There will be LOTS of tough times- we won’t sugar coat it. Your child’s behavior often regresses- parent’s have reported their child acting like a toddler and a completely different or exaggerated version of themselves. The path towards getting your child back is long and can seem endless. Hope, optimism and faith will make YOU more effective. It will make you push yourself , stick to the interventions and provide that essential combo of warmth and firmness. You can do this and your child CAN fully recover!
